Maggie's

Maggie’s Dundee provides free practical and emotional support for people with cancer and their families and friends, in Tayside and Perthshire. We offer an evidence based programme of support that has been shown to strengthen physical and emotional wellbeing.

The centre is a warm and welcoming place built in the grounds of Ninewells hospital, where professional staff are on hand to offer practical advice about all aspects of living with cancer, from benefits advice to nutritional information. It is a safe space where qualified staff can give emotional support and people can meet others in a similar situation to them, to talk around the kitchen table or simply sit quietly with a cup of tea.

Each Maggie’s centre is uniquely designed to create a space that is uplifting and comforting, where people can draw strength, share their experiences and feel supported. Architects who have designed Maggie’s centres include Frank Gehry, the late Dame Zaha Hadid and Richard Rogers. Maggie’s Dundee was the first custom built centre and was designed by Frank Gehry.

The first Maggie’s centre opened in Edinburgh in 1996. Two decades later, there are now 22 centres in the UK and abroad, with more planned for the future. Maggie’s also has an online centre for those not able to access a physical centre. Maggie’s was founded by Maggie Keswick Jencks and her husband Charles Jencks with help and support from her medical team. Maggie came up with her plan for the Maggie’s Edinburgh centre after being diagnosed with secondary breast cancer and felt strongly that people should not “lose the joy of living in the fear of dying”.

Every year in Scotland over 30,100 people are diagnosed with cancer and this figure is rising annually. Maggie’s is here to support people with cancer, as well as their families and friends, to live well with cancer. We welcome anyone living with cancer: from diagnosis, to treatment, post-treatment, at stages of recurrence, end-of-life or in bereavement.

Maggie’s relies on voluntary donations from supporters to grow our network of centres and to develop our unique, high quality programme of support. Our aim is to make the biggest difference possible to people living with cancer and their family and friends.
